Sharks edge Capitals in SO

Oct 15, 2014 - 2:50 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Pavelski was the lone goal scorer in the shootout and the San Jose Sharks defeated the Washington Capitals 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Pavelski, who had a goal in regulation, beat Justin Peters to his glove side with a rising shot into the top corner to complete the second round.

Matt Irwin scored twice, Tommy Wingels posted a goal and an assist and John Scott also lit the lamp for the Sharks, who are off to a 3-0 start for the third season in a row. Antti Niemi made 29 saves in the victory.

"Right now we're a team that's winning who needs lots of work. I guess that's a good thing," Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said.

Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist for Washington, which came back from deficits of 3-0 in the first period and 5-3 in the third. Mike Green had a goal and a helper, while Troy Brouwer and Marcus Johansson also scored for Washington.

"Simple mistakes," Ovechkin said of the slow start. "We understand how we have to play."

Braden Holtby made just four saves on seven shots before being pulled for Peters midway through the first period. Peters stopped 14-of-16 shots in defeat.

The Sharks led 5-3 early in the third period after Wingels wristed one home, but Washington scored twice in the final six minutes to force overtime.

Ovechkin ripped a wrister from the top of the left circle into the upper-left corner on a power play and just 1:16 later, Brouwer skated along the left wing, drove into the slot and deked before lifting his shot past the glove of Niemi to tie it.

Earlier, the Sharks scored three times within the first 9:34 of action.

Irwin scored the first two goals. The first came when he fired a slap shot from the left point following a face-off win 1:23 into the game. He scored on a power play minutes later on a rebound.

Johansson cleaned up the garbage in front on a power play 2:51 into the second to get Washington on the board, but Pavelski's wrister from the slot deflected off a Capitals skate and trickled across the goal line less than three minutes later to make it 4-1.

Washington scored the final two goals of the period in a 34-second span.

Green wristed one home from the left point and Ovechkin's sharp wrister from the high slot cut the deficit to 4-3 at the 7:09 mark.

Game Notes

Sharks defenseman Scott Hannan played in his 1,000th career NHL game ... It's the 11th time Ovechkin has recorded consecutive multi-goal games ... Washington participated in an NHL-high 21 shootouts last season.
