Nieto leads Sharks over Canucks

Mar 4, 2015 - 6:42 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Nieto posted two goals and an assist to lead the San Jose Sharks in a 6-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday.

Logan Couture, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Chris Tierney and Melker Karlsson all scored for the Sharks, who have won their past two. Antti Niemi stopped 26 shots in the win.

Henrik Sedin posted two goals and Daniel Sedin assisted on both of them for the Canucks, who had won three of four coming into the game.

Jacob Markstrom's first start of the year was short-lived as he gave up three goals on four shots in just under eight minutes of work. Eddie Lack stopped 23-of-24 shots in relief.

"I felt great coming in and getting a start like that is a bit of a nightmare," said Markstrom. "I want all three (goals) back."

San Jose scored just over three minutes in as Tierney picked up a turnover at the left circle and snapped it over Markstrom's glove for his second of the season.

Karlsson banged the puck in from in front after it had bounced off the backboards and over the net at 7:18, and Couture finished off a rebound at the left circle 27 seconds later for a 3-0 lead.

"We wanted to come out strong being on the road," said Nieto. "We were able to get a couple of quick ones there and then we concentrated on keeping them away from the net."

Vancouver got back into the game with a pair of goals in the second, the first one coming on the power play as Henrik Sedin one-timed home a feed from Daniel at the right circle 61 seconds in.

Just over eight minutes later, Daniel Sedin sent a turnaround pass from the left side of the net to the right where Henrik tucked it in for his 15th goal of the season.

San Jose, though, scored with 8:15 to play as Patrick Marleau stripped the puck at the right circle and fired a quick pass to the slot where Nieto one- timed it in.

The Canucks were unable to get any closer in the third, with Nieto and Vlasic scoring empty-netters to polish off the win.
