Watson nets 3 points as Predators beat Senators 7-5
Nov 11, 2015 - 5:26 AM NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Colton Sissons' flight to Nashville was nothing compared to the wild ride he and the Predators experienced on the ice Tuesday night.Austin Watson had a goal and two assists, leading the Predators to a 7-5 victory over the Ottawa Senators.
Sissons scored in the first period, only hours after getting called up from the minors. He was recalled from Milwaukee of the AHL and played his first NHL game of the season.
''It kind of got my legs under me and I had some good energy from there on out,'' Sissons said about his goal. ''It was awesome to get a quick one.''
Shea Weber, Roman Josi, Mattias Ekholm, Barret Jackman and Gabriel Bourque also scored for Nashville. Ryan Ellis and Seth Jones each posted a pair of assists.
The three-point effort for Watson doubled his career point total. The native of Michigan entered with three points in 16 NHL games.
Zack Smith scored twice and Milan Michalek, Erik Karlsson and Curtis Lazar also had goals for the Senators.
''It was back and forth through two, and then in the third period, we just didn't execute,'' Ottawa coach Dave Cameron said.
Trailing by one entering the final period, Nashville scored three times in the third to win.
Ekholm scored at 2:29, and Jackman and Bourque scored 1:34 apart midway through the frame. Ekholm and Bourque each added an assist in the game.
Ottawa had the momentum after the first, highlighted by Smith's second of the period, a short-handed goal with 37 seconds remaining.
With Nashville on a power play, Smith forced a turnover by former Senator Mike Fisher just inside the Predators blue line. Smith chased the puck down the left side before beating goalie Pekka Rinne with a wrist shot to the short side.
Rinne finished with 21 saves.
The teams combined for four goals in a span of 3:09 in the second. Weber, Josi and Watson scored for Nashville before Karlsson answered for the Senators at 9:32, tying it at 4.
Weber's goal came on a power play at 6:23 from the left faceoff dot. It was the Nashville captain's 150th career goal and 400th point.
''We came in after the first, we knew we weren't good and had to get better,'' Weber said. ''I thought we had a lot better second and we just stuck with it.''
Karlsson's goal was the two-time Norris Trophy-winning defenseman's first of the season. Just 1:36 before that, Josi chipped a puck off the boards and around Karlsson before the Swiss blue liner beat Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson with a wrist shot in close on the left side.
Anderson made 31 saves.
''It's a game of mistakes and there's going to be chances,'' Anderson said. ''Tonight just wasn't my night as far as making the save that we needed. That's more frustrating on myself than anything else.''
Ottawa regained the lead on Lazar's power-play goal at 19:08 of the second.
''We climbed out of a big hole to not only get back even but to get up, and then I think I blinked twice and we were back down by one,'' Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. ''It was just one of those nights. It's a weird game, they happen, but I really liked the resiliency of our guys.''
The Senators managed only three shots in the second but scored on two of them.
NOTES: Jackman's goal was his first with the Predators. ... Sissons was recalled to replace C Paul Gaustad, who missed the game with a lower-body injury. ... After not scoring a power-play goal in six games, the Senators have one in consecutive games. ... Nashville has allowed two power-play goals in its last three games.
