Angelidis gets rare goal, Lightning beat Senators 5-2
Dec 21, 2015 - 4:07 AM TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Mike Angelidis had to wait nervously through a video review before officially getting credit for his rare goal. The left wing scored his first NHL goal in almost four years and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Ottawa Senators 5-2 on Sunday.
''It felt good,'' Angelidis said. ''You know every chance you get to play up here is a blessing.''
The Lightning also got a pair of goals from Steven Stamkos, including one of two late empty-netters. Nikita Nesterov and Alex Killorn had the other Tampa Bay goals.
Zack Smith and Erik Karlsson scored for the Senators, who have lost six of their last seven road games.
''It's a little different for us,'' Smith said. ''We're usually pretty strong on the road. Too many mistakes, too many turnovers.''
The Senators, who entered with the NHL's second-best power play on the road, failed to score in five chances.
''It wasn't clicking at all,'' Karlsson said. ''Why? I don't know.''
Angelidis, playing in his second NHL game this season and 12th overall, made it 3-1 at 2:45 of the second period when he beat Andrew Hammond during a goalmouth scramble. It was the second career goal for Angelidis, with the other coming against Columbus on Jan. 24, 2012.
The goal was upheld after a coach's challenge for goalie interference by Ottawa's Dave Cameron.
''The guys were telling me it was a goal,'' said Angelidis, who has appeared in 594 minor leagues games in the AHL.
Both teams had a goal during Tampa Bay's 3-minute power play stemming from a 5-minute interference call on defenseman Mark Borowiecki for a hit on Brian Boyle 1:40 into the game.
Boyle's head hit the glass and he also cut his nose. He left the game and didn't return.
Borowiecki also received a game misconduct.
Tampa Bay coach Jon Copper had no update on Boyle's condition.
After Smith scored the Senators' eighth short-handed goal this season at 4:20, Nesterov tied it at 1 on his first goal in 15 games 63 seconds later.
Stamkos, who stopped a 10-game goal drought in Friday's 5-3 loss at Washington, made it 2-1 at 7:16 of the first while Smith was off for tripping.
Hammond, playing in his second game since returning from a mid-November injury, stopped Valtteri Filppula's backhander on a penalty shot midway through the third.
Hammond had 30 saves.
Karlsson pulled Ottawa to 3-2 on a shot from the blue line that got past goalie Ben Bishop just after a power play ended with 5:32 left in the second.
Bishop, who is 8-0-3 against Ottawa, stopped 23 shots.
Killorn and Stamkos had the empty-net goals.
Ottawa right wing Bobby Ryan (hand) and defenseman Cody Ceci (upper body) both left with injuries.
With both Borowiecki and Ceci gone early, Karlsson played 36 minutes, 34 seconds.
