Heatley, Spezza power-play goals lift Senators over Maple Leafs
Sep 25, 2006 - 1:14 AM HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators still know how to operate well on the power play.Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza scored power-play goals 73 seconds apart early in the third period to help carry the Senators to a 3-2 preseason victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Senators trailed, 2-1, early in the final period when they capitalized twice on 5-on-3 situations. Heatley tied the game when he beat goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin at 4:51, and Spezza scored the game-winner shortly thereafter.
Ottawa, which led the league with 314 goals last season, also ranked fourth on the power play, connecting on nearly 21 percent of its attempts.
The Maple Leafs took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Jeff O'Neill at 3:09 and John Pohl nearly five minutes later. Toronto outshot Ottawa, 19-6, in the period.
Ottawa came to life in the second, outshooting the Maple Leafs, 17-8, and sliced the deficit to 2-1 when Chris Kelly converted a power-play opportunity at 17:29.
The Senators went 3-for-9 on the power play, while the Leafs converted only one of nine attempts.
Ottawa defenseman Wade Redden left late in the second period with a tight right groin.
