Blackhawks edge Blues 3-2 in OT

Oct 19, 2010 - 5:00 AM CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago's two hottest goal scorers bailed out the Blackhawks with late tallies on Monday night.

Marian Hossa scored a pair of goals 2:31 apart late in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit, then Patrick Sharp connected at 3:50 of overtime to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

Sharp extended Chicago's winning streak to three games when he scored from just to the left of the crease after taking a cross-ice pass from Patrick Kane and whipping a shot past Jaroslav Halak.

Hossa leads the NHL with seven goals and 11 points in seven games.

Sharp has six goals for the season, five in his past three games.

"(Sharp) had an amazing shot," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "We've got guys who can see lanes and thread needles, and Sharpie anticipates them."

"The first 50 minutes, there weren't a lot of offensive chances out there," Sharp said. "It was frustrating, but encouraging we got it to overtime."

Hossa spoiled a shutout bid by Halak with 6:48 left in the third when he scored a power-play goal by backhanding in a rebound of Brent Seabrook's shot.

Hossa tied it at 2 with 4:17 to go when he fired in a loose puck, also on a backhand shot, from a scrum in the crease.

"I feel really good so far," Hossa said. "There's still things I should be working on, but so far the puck is going in for me."

"He had the puck a lot tonight," Quenneville said. "He's tough to defend against with his speed and quickness, and great hands around the net."

David Perron scored his first two goals of the season for the Blues, whose losing streak reached three.

"There's always details you can do better," Perron said. "It's a question of bouncing back the next time we play them."

Halak, who was acquired from Montreal in a trade in June, got solid defensive support during the first 50 minutes. He stopped 30 shots.

But the Hossa and Sharp eventually broke through.

"I thought in the third (period), they would push," St. Louis coach Davis Payne said. "You knew you were going to see some heat."

Chicago's Marty Turco made 32 saves.

The Blackhawks dressed seven defensemen, with 6-foot-7 John Scott moving up to play a handful of shifts on the wing on the fourth line.

Turco faced the tougher chances in a scoreless first, including a point-black pad save on Brad Boyes' deflection in the final minute.

Perron opened the scoring midway through the second with the only goal of the period. He cut in off right wing and past Seabrook, and then stuffed a backhand between Turco's pads from a sharp angle.

With about five minutes left in the second, Turco made a pair of close-saves on Boyes and Patrik Berglund.

Moments later, Halak made a quick pad save on Tomas Kopecky's drive from the slot. Perron made it 2-0 with his second goal at 9:29 of the third.

After taking a cross-ice pass from T.J. Oshie, Perron connected on a shot from the right circle with David Backes screening Turco.

Notes: St. Louis C Vladimir Sobotka played his first game with the Blues. Sobotka, who had been acquired in a trade from Boston in July, missed the Blues first four games recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. Chicago LW Viktor Stalberg and St. Louis D Tyson Strachan were healthy scratches.
