Brodeur leads Devils past Canadiens

Oct 22, 2010 - 3:14 AM MONTREAL (AP) -- New Jersey's two wins this season have been Martin Brodeur shutouts.

Brodeur is confident that will turn around.

Brodeur made 29 saves for his 112th career shutout and Jason Arnott had a goal and an assist to lead New Jersey to a 3-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

The league's career leader in wins and shutouts stuck out his left pad to stop Mike Cammalleri early in the third, protecting a 2-0 lead on his way to his 604th victory. He also stopped 24 shots in a 1-0 win in Buffalo on Oct. 13.

"It looks like it so far but hopefully we'll get different kinds of wins eventually because it'll be tough to do that," Brodeur said. "It's been a rocky start but on the road the last few games with Buffalo and here in Montreal, it's nice to have shutouts but definitely wins is what we're looking for right now."

Arnott, who scored in the second, assisted on Matt Taormina's goal 3:38 into the third. Zach Parise also scored for New Jersey (2-4-1).

"I thought everybody was up for the game and everybody contributed in different ways," Devils coach John MacLean said.

Carey Price made 17 saves in his sixth straight start for Montreal (3-2-1).

Canadiens captain Brian Gionta misfired on a promising power-play chance in the third. The former Devils forward was penalized twice in the second for interfering with Brodeur.

"It was just one of those frustrating nights," Gionta said. "You knew that they were going to come out, they needed to play extremely well, and I thought we had some good things going in the first. We got out of our rhythm in the second and then we just couldn't catch up in the third."

Montreal held a 10-3 advantage in shots in the first period, which had no shots on goal in the final 9 minutes.

Parise gave New Jersey the lead 4:20 into the game. He took Travis Zajac's pass from behind the net and slipped the puck past Price from the goalmouth for his second of the season.

"This crowd, they get going pretty good, they're loud so it was nice that Zach got that one somewhat early and we were able to keep building from there," MacLean said.

Ilya Kovalchuk shot wide on a breakaway later in the first after intercepting Jaroslav Spacek's cross-ice pass at the Canadiens' blue line.

Arnott made it 2-0 with his third goal 14:59 into the second. His shot from the right side struck Montreal's Dustin Boyd on its way past Price.

Taormina beat Price with a slap shot from the point off a faceoff in the Canadiens' zone in the third.

"They did what they needed to do," Price said. "They got pucks at the net and they found a way to get them to the back of the net, and we needed to find the same way."

NOTES: Brodeur is 39-16-5 overall against Montreal with nine shutouts, the most he has against an opponent outside the Atlantic Division. He has 10 shutouts against Philadelphia and nine against the New York Islanders. ... Devils D Olivier Magnan made his NHL debut. "He kept the game simple and he's a strong kid and he did a good job," MacLean said. ... D Ryan O'Byrne and LW Mathieu Darche did not dress for Montreal.
