Stars use special teams to upend Coyotes

Nov 6, 2010 - 6:45 AM Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Loui Eriksson and Brad Richards each extended their respective point streaks to five games after both posted two goals, and the Dallas Stars used a four-goal second period to rout the Phoenix Coyotes, 6-3.

Brenden Morrow scored his 200th career goal for the Stars, who have won three straight. Jamie Benn also tallied, and Kari Lehtonen stopped 25-of-28 shots in the victory.

"It's what we've done the last three games at home instead of letting other teams hang around and stay close," Richards said of the team getting out to big leads during its win streak. "When you do that, a lucky bounce here or there for the other team can get them ahead or in the game, but we've kept the pedal to the metal."

Dallas, which recorded more than one power play goal in just one of its 11 games prior to Friday, exploded for four goals with the man advantage on six opportunities. In the first 11 contests, the Stars had six power play goals total.

Sami Lepisto and Shane Doan scored for the Coyotes, who have yet to record back-to-back wins this season. Ilya Bryzgalov, making his 200th career appearance with Phoenix, was pulled after allowing three goals on 18 shots.

"It was disappointing. We got behind early -- they got some breaks on some pucks that bounced off our guys and into the net," said Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett. "We couldn't create any breaks ourselves. Usually, when a team gets breaks like that, they earn those breaks."

Dallas' suddenly potent power play struck in the first period when Eriksson redirected a Mike Ribeiro pass high into the net at the 15:44 mark.

Richards scored twice in less than a two-minute span to open the second period, and his power play goal with 14:39 remaining in the middle frame put the hosts ahead, 3-0.

Phoenix finally cracked the scoreboard on Lepisto's second tally of the season at 13:34, but Benn restored Dallas' three-goal lead with a power-play goal 2 1/2 minutes later, and Eriksson's second goal of the game with 2:51 left while on the man advantage made it 5-1.

On Eriksson's goal, Matt Niskanen skated down the right side and made a nifty move to deke two defenders. He fired the puck across the ice to a streaking Eriksson, who redirected it into the net.

Doan scored a power play goal for Phoenix 2:28 into the third, but Morrow came back with a wrister from the slot to push the Dallas advantage back to four, 6-2, with 3:27 to play.

Only 25 seconds later, Adrian Aucoin scored for the Coyotes to cap the scoring.
