Weiss leads the way in Panthers win over 'Canes

Nov 6, 2010 - 7:29 AM Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Stephen Weiss scored a pair of goals and assisted on another, leading Florida in a 7-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

David Booth, Michael Frolik and Marty Reasoner each tallied a goal and an assist, while Mike Santorelli and Chris Higgins also scored for the Panthers, who have won four straight at home over Carolina. Tomas Vokoun got off to a rough start, allowing two goals in seven shots, and Scott Clemmensen stopped 22-of-24 shots in relief for the win.

Tim Gleason, Sergei Samsonov, Tuomo Ruutu and Erik Cole all scored for the Hurricanes, who have not been able to win consecutive games since their first two games of the year.

Cam Ward was peppered with 49 shots and stopped only 43 of them in defeat.

"We weren't very good tonight and didn't deserve to win," said Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice.

Carolina had plenty of chances to stay in this game, but it went 0-for-7 on the power play -- 10:11 of time with the man-advantage.

After an offensive first period that saw three goals from each team, Florida went ahead with the only goal of the second.

Radek Dvorak found Higgins in the slot on a perfect pass to the tape, and Higgins was able to find daylight from that area, beating Ward low and to the left with 3:17 left.

Reasoner put the Panthers ahead by two 2:24 into the third on a chip shot from out in front, but Carolina pulled to within one again when Samsonov redirected a pass from Jay Harrison from the crease into the net with 15:13 to play.

The Hurricanes failed to draw even on a couple power play chances down the stretch, and Frolik sealed the game with just under three minutes to play when he one-timed a Weiss pass from the left of the net. Weiss added an empty-net goal with 49 ticks to play.

Booth put Florida ahead 2:05 into the game, but Cole came back with a nifty wrister in between two defenders that beat Vokoun six minutes later.

Gleason's first goal of the season gave Carolina its first lead at the 10:49 mark of the opening period, before Weiss tied the game again 1 1/2 minutes later on his second of the year.

Santorelli's rebound shot off a 2-on-1 odd-man rush put Florida back ahead with 1:43 remaining in the opening period, but Ruutu's wrister seven seconds later tied the game, 3-3, after 20 minutes.

Game Notes

Florida went 0-for-2 on the power play and had less than two minutes of time with the man advantage...These two teams play on Saturday in Carolina...The seven goals is a season high for the Panthers...These teams split six meetings last season, with the home team winning each time.
