Shot-happy Panthers visit Hurricanes

Nov 6, 2010 - 2:44 PM (Sports Network) - The Florida Panthers have had mixed results over their last two games despite unleashing a total of 105 shots. They go for a third straight game of at least 50 shots this evening in the conclusion of a home- and-home set versus the Carolina Hurricanes at RBC Center.

Florida matched a club record when it tallied 55 shots versus Atlanta on Wednesday, but lost a 4-3 decision. The Panthers came right back last night with another 50 blasts on net, notching a 7-4 triumph over the Hurricanes. The two teams combined for six goals in the opening frame and the shot total for Florida over its last two games is a club record.

Stephen Weiss scored twice and assisted on another tally, while David Booth, Michael Frolik and Marty Reasoner all had a goal and an assist.

"I can't explain it [the back-to-back 50-shot games]. Guys are working hard," said Florida head coach Peter DeBoer. "They're working hard offensively, their working hard on the forecheck. We're being a tenacious team to play against and we're getting rewarded for that and we have to keep that up."

Tomas Vokoun made the start in net, but allowed two goals on seven shots and was lifted for Scott Clemmensen, who made 22 saves in relief to get the win and improve to 1-2-0 with a 3.33 goals-against average in five games and three relief appearances lifetime versus the Hurricanes.

Florida notched its best single-game goal total of the season and bested the Hurricanes for the fourth straight time at home. Tonight it goes for a third straight win over the club and first in its last four trips to RBC Center.

The Panthers have won two of three overall, but could be without forward Cory Stillman tonight after he suffered a shoulder injury in Friday's meeting.

Carolina got goals from Tim Gleason, Sergei Samsonov, Tuomo Ruutu and Erik Cole, but also went 0-for-7 on the power play and lost for the third time in four games. The 'Canes have yet to win back-to-back games this season.

"We weren't very good tonight and didn't deserve to win," said Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice.

Cam Ward was peppered with 49 shots and stopped only 43 of them in defeat. He has lost three of his last four starts versus the Panthers.
