Canucks light up Howard, Red Wings for sixth straight win

Nov 7, 2010 - 4:02 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Manny Malhotra had two goals and an assist to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 6-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Rogers Arena.

Alexander Edler had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who have won six straight games. Roberto Luongo was charged with four goals on 28 shots to pick up the win.

Niklas Kronwall had two goals while Jonathan Ericsson and Daniel Cleary each lit the lamp for the Red Wings, who had won six of their last seven coming into the contest.

Jimmy Howard, who had not lost a game in regulation in 22 consecutive starts, was tagged for all six goals on 34 shots to take the loss.

With the score tied in the third, Vancouver took a 5-4 lead on the power play, as Edler's one-timer from the slot got past Howard at the 8:18 mark.

The Canucks then took a two-goal edge at 11:02, again with the man advantage. Malhotra chipped in a rebound at the right side as he was falling to the ice for his second goal of the game.

Detroit was unable to get any past Luongo from there as Vancouver held on for the win.

Daniel Sedin scored on a slap shot in the final minute of the first period to give Vancouver the lead, but Cleary tied the game 2:51 into the second.

The Red Wings went in front at the 4:29 mark of the second when Kronwall grabbed his own rebound and chipped it past Luongo. But the Canucks got the goal back a bit over a minute later when Mikael Samuelsson redirected a Tanner Glass point shot.

Malhotra gave Vancouver a 3-2 lead while shorthanded, as he skated into the Detroit end unopposed and faked to the forehand before lifting the puck past Howard with 2:09 left in the second.

Detroit, though, tied the game with 58.6 seconds left in the second when Ericsson one-timed a Nicklas Lidstrom pass by Luongo with Cleary providing a screen in front.

Kronwall gave Detroit a 4-3 edge 1:40 into the third when he fired a wrister from the slot through the legs of a defender and over Luongo's glove, but the Canucks tied the game just over two minutes later as Jannik Hansen swept in a Malhotra rebound.
