Price and Canadiens shut down Canucks

Nov 10, 2010 - 3:25 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Carey Price stopped all 33 shots he faced and earned his sixth career shutout, as the Montreal Canadiens cooled off the red- hot Vancouver Canucks with a 2-0 win at Bell Centre.

Andrei Markov and Roman Hamrlik scored for Montreal, which has won two of its last three games. The Canadiens improved to 4-3-1 on home ice this season.

Roberto Luongo finished with 27 saves for the Canucks, who saw their six-game win streak halted. This marked the first time in eight games that Vancouver failed to earn at least one point and it was the club's first regulation loss since October 19.

Markov's first goal of the campaign opened the scoring at the 6:53 mark of the first period. A shot toward the net from the left side along the goal line hit traffic in front and Luongo was not able to control the puck. Brian Gionta attempted a rebound from the left post, which was unsuccessful. Finally, from the top of the crease, Markov punched it home.

After a scoreless middle stanza, the Habs gained a two-goal edge with a power-play marker at 4:39 of the third period. After Vancouver blueliner Andrew Alberts lifted the puck over the glass and was whistled for a delay of game minor, the hosts went to work with the extra skater and Hamrlik drilled in his first goal of 2010-11 off a rebound from the left circle.

In the final 10 minutes of action, the Canucks had several chances but could not solve Price. Daniel Sedin's wrister from the slot on a partial breakaway was turned aside by Price's shoulder. Moments later, Kevin Bieksa's shot from the right point nearly made it through heavy traffic in front, but Price made the stop.

Game Notes

It was Price's second shutout of the season. He stopped 19 shots in the third...Alberts had six of Vancouver's eight penalty minutes...The Habs have captured three of the last four meetings with the Canucks, who have dropped three straight in Montreal...This marked Vancouver's first loss against an Eastern Conference team this season (3-1-0)...Montreal was 1-for-4 on the power play, while the visitors had four chances with the extra skater.
