Caps hope to run win streak to six in clash with Lightning

Nov 11, 2010 - 4:13 PM (Sports Network) - The first-place Washington Capitals will aim for a sixth consecutive victory tonight, when they welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning for a Southeast Division clash at Verizon Center.

The Capitals have a 7-1-0 record in their last eight games and with 22 points they are currently four ahead of Tampa Bay for first place in the Southeast.

Washington has dominated the recent series with the Lightning, claiming victory in 15 of the last 17 meetings. The Caps have also won nine of the last 11 matchups in D.C.

The Capitals picked up their most recent victory Tuesday night in New York City. Matt Hendricks scored the game-winning goal in the third period and Washington skated to the 5-3 decision at Madison Square Garden.

Brooks Laich scored two goals while John Erskine and Mike Knuble also scored for the streaking Capitals. Michal Neuvirth allowed three goals on 28 shots while Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green both posted two assists in the victory.

Ovechkin has his team's longest current point streak, recording four goals and eight assists during a seven-game stretch. Alexander Semin and Mike Green enter tonight with point streaks of six and five games, respectively. Washington has won its last four home games and is 7-1-0 as the host team this season.

The Lightning will try to win a second straight game after going 0-2-1 to start the month of November.

The Bolts ended the slide with Tuesday's home win over Toronto. Dan Ellis made 28 saves to record his second shutout of the season in the 4-0 victory. Steven Stamkos scored twice for the Lightning, while Nate Thompson and Dominic Moore also lit the lamp. Tampa Bay scored three of its four goals in the first period.

"It was a great start to set the tone for the game," Stamkos said. "I thought the first period was one of the best we played all year."

Lightning forward Steve Downie missed the last game with a back injury and is not expected to play tonight.

Tampa Bay has lost three straight on the road and is 4-3-1 overall as the guest this year. Beginning with tonight's tilt, the Bolts will play five of their next six games on the road.
