Sharks welcome Flames to San Jose
Nov 13, 2010 - 4:11 PM (Sports Network) - The San Jose Sharks have been tough to beat at home recently and the club will try to continue that trend tonight, when they host the Calgary Flames at HP Pavilion. The Sharks are 2-0-1 so far on a five-game homestand that is set to end Monday against Los Angeles. San Jose hasn't lost a home game in regulation since October 19 and is 4-0-1 in its last five tilts at the Shark Tank.
San Jose outlasted the New York Islanders in its last game on Thursday night, posting a 2-1 shootout victory to hand the Isles their ninth straight defeat.
Logan Couture scored the winner in the shootout for the Sharks, slipping a backhander between the pads of Dwayne Roloson. Antero Niittymaki made 24 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped all three shootout attempts to earn the victory.
Dan Boyle scored in regulation and also scored in the shootout for San Jose, Niittymaki stopped 24 shots for the Sharks, who had dropped three of four coming into Thursday's test.
"We're at home, we've got to make it count," Boyle said. "It's a pretty long homestand, I think five games total. It's important right now to get some of those points we lost earlier in the season."
The Sharks will hope to fare better against the Flames tonight than they did a few weeks back when San Jose was blanked, 4-0, in Calgary. The Flames have won five of eight and eight out of 12 overall in this series and Calgary has also notched four victories in its last six trips to San Jose.
However, the Flames have just one win in their last six games overall and after posting a 4-2 win Tuesday in Colorado, Calgary was unable to record a victory Friday in Phoenix. Vernon Fiddler's first career hat trick helped the Coyotes edge the Flames, 5-4.
Rene Bourque had a goal and an assist in Friday's loss, while Ian White, Tim Jackman and Alex Tanguay each scored once for the Flames. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 21-of-25 shots in the loss.
In other news, Flames center Brett Sutter was arrested early Thursday morning in Scottsdale, Arizona on suspicion of assault. According to Scottsdale police, Sutter allegedly punched another man while the two were leaving a bar. He was released on bond.
Sutter, the son of Flames general manager Darryl Sutter and nephew of head coach Brent Sutter, has appeared in just four games this season and has one assist. He hasn't played since October 16.
Calgary is 3-4-0 on the road this season and has lost two of its last three games as the guest. The Flames will play their next two games on home ice before heading out on a five-game road trip.
