Streaking Rangers host Bruins

Nov 17, 2010 - 4:14 PM (Sports Network) - The New York Rangers will try to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games when they welcome the Boston Bruins for tonight's Original Six battle at Madison Square Garden.

New York has won three straight and is coming off Monday's dramatic overtime victory in Pittsburgh. Tonight, the Rangers will be aiming for their first four-game winning streak since December 17-23 of last season.

Ryan Callahan was the hero for the Blueshirts on Monday, scoring the game- winner off a nice feed from Brandon Dubinsky with 1:22 remaining in OT and handing New York the 3-2 decision at CONSOL Energy Center.

"The way we did it just shows a lot of character in our team which is good for the room," Callahan told New York's official web site. "To win a game like this early in the season when we were not at our best, but we battled and worked hard, tied it up late and then won it in overtime, is just great. To come into Pittsburgh and get the two points like that is a really good win."

The Rangers led 1-0 heading into the final minutes of regulation, but Pittsburgh scored twice in a 38-second span to take a 2-1 lead with 1:53 left in the third period. However, Marc Staal scored the tying goal for New York just 27 seconds later to send the game to OT. All told, three goals were scored in a 55-second span.

Henrik Lundqvist, who missed New York's previous two games due to an illness, was sensational between the pipes before allowing the two late goals. Lundqvist finished with 37 saves to improve to 7-5-1 on the season.

New York did not have a single chance on the power play in Monday's game. It marked the first time the Rangers went an entire game without a power-play opportunity since January 16, 2007 at New Jersey.

On the injury front for New York, defenseman Dan Girardi is questionable for tonight's game after getting hit in the face with a puck in the third period against Pittsburgh.

Boston enters tonight with a shot at winning consecutive games for the first time this month. The Bruins had lost two in a row before disposing of the visiting New Jersey Devils, 3-0, at TD Garden on Monday.

Tim Thomas turned aside 28 shots to record his fourth shutout of the season and 21st of his career. The Bruins netminder also bounced back from his first loss of the season and is now 9-1-0 on the year.

"I felt like they weren't going to find a way to score," Thomas said. "I used to not care about shutouts, and I still don't for the most part, but getting to 25 is a milestone that few people reach at the NHL."

Michael Ryder, Nathan Horton and Blake Wheeler tallied for the Bruins, who also got two assists from Mark Recchi.

The Rangers recorded a 3-2 regulation win in Boston on October 23, continuing New York's pattern of success against the Bruins in recent years. The Blueshirts have won four of five, seven of 10 and 15 of the last 21 meetings overall and Boston has dropped five straight and nine out of 10 in NYC.

New York has a 4-5-1 home record this year, while the Bruins are sporting an impressive 6-1-0 mark as the visiting team.
