Winchester caps Blues' rally past Devils

Nov 21, 2010 - 6:58 AM
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Brad Winchester scored the game-winning goal early in the third period to lift St. Louis to a 3-2 comeback win over New Jersey at Scottrade Center.

Alex Pietrangelo and Eric Brewer notched the other goals for the Blues, who got 35 stops from Jaroslav Halak to remain undefeated at home in regulation (8-0-1).

"I thought tonight was just a matter of finding a way," said Blues head coach Davis Payne. "We really didn't have the jump that was necessary, and we made some mental errors. There was lots of try, lots of intent, which was something we talk about at great length."

David Clarkson and Mattias Tedenby tallied for the Devils, who have dropped three in a row and five out of six.

New Jersey was dealt another blow Saturday in already tough season when it was reported by a New Jersey newspaper that goaltender Martin Brodeur may not return to action for up to two weeks due to the recurrence of a right elbow injury. Brodeur was originally hurt in Chicago on November 3.

Mike McKenna, a native of St. Louis, started in Brodeur's place and wound up taking the defeat after allowing three goals on 27 shots.

"We had some energy. I thought we came out strong," said New Jersey head coach John MacLean. We played hard. We had an opportunity go up 3-1, but we couldn't bury the third one."

The teams traded goals in each of the first two periods and went into the final 20 minutes locked at 2-2.

Matt D'Agostini banked a pass off the wall back to the right point, from where Tyson Strachan's slapshot was redirected in front by Winchester at 5:15 for what turned into the decisive tally.

New Jersey struck just 26 ticks into the contest when Clarkson took a wrist shot from the left circle that tipped off Halak's glove and into the net for the first goal of the night.

St. Louis tied the score nine minutes later on the power play when Pietrangelo tipped in a David Backes shot.

The Devils regained the lead just before the midpoint of the middle session on a Tedenby backhander before the Blues got the game even again with a fluke goal 62 seconds before the period ended.

Brewer's slapshot caromed off the end boards and off the back of an unsuspecting McKenna and into the net.
