Lidstrom's OT goal leads Detroit over Calgary

Nov 22, 2010 - 4:18 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Nicklas Lidstrom's goal 1:38 into overtime lifted Detroit past Calgary, 5-4, at Joe Louis Arena.

Lidstrom also had two assists and Henrik Zetterberg scored two third-period goals, including the equalizer, to help Detroit finish a six-game homestand with five wins.

Pavel Datsyuk had two assists and a goal, Johan Franzen lit the lamp once and Jimmy Howard made 23 saves for the victors.

Jarome Iginla assisted on Calgary's opening goal and scored the next two as he continued his hot streak that started with a hat trick in Friday's victory over Chicago. Niklas Hagman and Alex Tanguay both scored a goal in the loss, while Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 33 shots.

Lidstrom's game-winner came from a short pass from Darren Helm. He took the puck in front of the net, deked Kiprusoff and put in a backhander for the win.

The Red Wings scored the final two goals in the third period to send the game into the extra period. Zetterberg's first came with 8:56 left, when he received a pass from Datsyuk, weaved past two Flames defenders and ripped a backhand shot that deflected off Kiprusoff's pad before going in the net.

Zetterberg scored the equalizer on a 6-on-4 advantage with only four ticks left. Datsyuk took the puck into the zone and handled it through two Calgary defenders to make a backhand pass to Zetterberg, who shot it past Kiprusoff.

Franzen opened the scoring with a power-play goal only two minutes into the contest. Detroit worked the puck around, and Brian Rafalski sent a crossing pass to Franzen for a goal.

Nearly 3 1/2 minutes later, Hagman tied the game when he received a pass from Iginla at the center of the blue line and backhanded it in the net.

Iginla netted his first during the first minute of the second period to give Calgary a 2-1 lead. After Matt Stajan's strong forecheck, he tipped the puck to Iginla, who wristed it in from the slot.

The captain got his second goal 4:09 into the second, when Tanguay slapped a pass to Iginla on the left side of the net. Iginla then corralled in the puck and slipped it past a diving Howard for a power-play marker.

The Red Wings cut their deficit in half 2:28 into the third while on the man advantage. Only 35 ticks into the power play, Lidstrom ripped a one-timer off a Rafalski pass from the top of the right circle, and the shot was deflected by Datsyuk.

Calgary made it a 4-2 game with 12:46 left to play, when Tanguay attacked in the offensive zone while Rafalski was trying to control the puck and fell. Tanguay then carried the puck past Howard and lifted it in the top left corner of the goal.
