Nash stays hot, scores in Columbus' win over Predators
Nov 23, 2010 - 5:18 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Rick Nash extended his points steak to nine games with a goal in Columbus' 2-0 victory against Nashville at Nationwide Arena.Nash has scored 10 goals in nine games while being announced the NHL's No. 1 Star for the week ending November 21, as the Blue Jackets notched their fourth straight win.
Steve Mason turned away 27 shots in his 16th career shutout -- his first of the season -- while R.J. Umberger, Nikita Filatov, Jakub Voracek and Derick Brassard each recorded assists in the win.
"Obviously a shutout is a total team effort and tonight, much like we have had in our past couple of games, the defensemen have been great -- a lot of big blocked shots -- and they are really making both goaltender's jobs easier," Mason said.
Pekka Rinne stopped 28 shots for Nashville, which had its two-game win streak snapped.
Columbus scored its first goal in transition 8 1/2 minutes into the game. Mike Commodore trailed the rush, and Umberger found him wide open at the top of the right faceoff circle, where he ripped a shot between Rinne's legs.
"Once they got that first goal they had a lot of people back and you have to get pucks behind them and then they have to retrieve them and then they have to make something happen," Nashville head coach Barry Trotz said. "And they didn't allow that, they played really well. They are on top of their game right now."
The Blue Jackets took a 2-0 lead 14:14 into the second period when Nash banked in a one-timer on a cross-ice pass from Voracek
Mason made a fantastic butterfly spread with 9:14 left to play in the contest to keep Nashville off the board.
Rinne was pulled with 1:26 left in the game, but 10 seconds later Shane O'Brien was called for a tripping call to force the goaltender back between the pipes, and the Blue Jackets were able to keep Nashville scoreless.
