Streaking Coyotes welcome Oilers to the desert
Nov 23, 2010 - 3:30 PM (Sports Network) - The red-hot Phoenix Coyotes will shoot for a seventh consecutive victory when they welcome the lowly Edmonton Oilers for tonight's battle at Jobing.com Arena. The Coyotes, who made a surprise trip to the playoffs last season, have seemed to put their early struggles behind them and are beginning to resemble the team that won 50 games a year ago.
Before winning their last six games, the Coyotes had posted a 4-5-5 record in their first 14 tilts of the season. The current winning streak is the longest since the club won nine in a row from March 4-21 of last season.
Phoenix has also gone eight straight since its last regulation loss, a 6-3 setback in Dallas on Nov. 5.
The Coyotes recently wrapped a perfect three-game road trip with Sunday's close regulation win in Vancouver.
Former Canuck Taylor Pyatt scored his second goal of the game 5:52 into the third period, lifting the Coyotes to a 3-2 decision in Vancouver. Pyatt snapped an 18-game goal drought, scoring for the first time since Oct. 9 against Boston.
"We wanted to come out and play well and it was an all-around good team effort," Pyatt said.
Scottie Upshall also scored for the Coyotes, while Ilya Bryzgalov made 25 saves and weathered a last-minute flurry of shots from the Canucks.
Phoenix is back on home ice for two straight as the club will also host Anaheim this Saturday. The Coyotes have won their last two home games and are 4-2-3 in the desert this season.
Tonight marks the second meeting between Phoenix and Edmonton in less than a week. The Oilers dropping a 4-3 shootout decision to the visiting Coyotes on Friday, losing on Eric Belanger's tally in the fifth round. The Coyotes have won four straight and five out of six in this series overall and Edmonton has lost three in a row in Phoenix.
The Oilers were able to rebound from Friday's loss to Phoenix and snap several losing streaks with Sunday's 4-2 win in Anaheim. Ales Hemsky scored the go- ahead goal in the third period and Devan Dubnyk made 38 saves to lead Edmonton to the win at the Honda Center.
Edmonton entered the game on a six-game skid and had lost eight of its previous nine games. The Oilers also had dropped their last five games against the Ducks, but Hemsky's tally was the difference after Edmonton blew a two- goal lead.
Taylor Hall and Sam Gagner also scored for the Oilers, while Dustin Penner added two assists.
The Oilers will try to post consecutive victories for just the second time this season and for the first time since they opened the campaign with wins over Calgary and Florida.
Edmonton halted a four-game road losing streak with Sunday's win in Anaheim. The Oilers have a 3-5-3 record as the visiting team this year.
