Hurricanes try to end slide in clash with Bruins
Nov 26, 2010 - 3:46 PM (Sports Network) - The struggling Carolina Hurricanes will try to end a three- game slide when they visit the Boston Bruins for today's matinee at TD Garden. The Hurricanes have posted an 0-1-2 record in their last three outings and have dropped five out of six overall. Carolina was dealt shootout losses in the first two games of this current slide, but lost in regulation to visiting Washington on Wednesday.
Brooks Laich tipped in the decisive goal with time winding down in the third period, leading the Capitals to the 3-2 win at RBC Center. Laich's power-play score came after the Capitals had blown a 2-0 lead in the third period.
Eric Staal and Sergei Samsonov scored the goals for Carolina, while Justin Peters gave Cam Ward a rare night off and stopped 35-of-38 shots in the setback.
"We've got to try and have a better start," Staal said. "You can't let a good team like that get two goals on you early in the game and expect to win."
Today's tilt marks the first of two straight on the road for the 'Canes, who have lost four straight away from Raleigh and are 4-6-1 overall as the visiting team this year.
The Bruins, meanwhile, were able to end a two-game slide in their last trip to the ice. Boston had lost games to Los Angeles and Tampa Bay before defeating the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.
Boston posted the 3-1 road win over the Panthers thanks in large part to a pair of third-period goals by Mark Recchi. Recchi's second goal of the contest gave him 1,500 career points and made him the 13th player in NHL history to reach the plateau.
"It's pretty nice when it comes in a big win like that," Recchi said about his milestone marker. "They were important goals, and that's what makes it so rewarding, that we won. There have been a lot of teammates over the years that have been a part of this."
Brad Marchand also scored and David Krejci picked up two assists for the Bruins. Tim Thomas was solid once again, stopping 31-of-32 shots and improving to 11-1-1 on the season.
"We're gonna have a much better Thanksgiving than the Panthers, probably," quipped Thomas. "They battled hard again, but we've developed a habit of coming on in the third period. We have to stop that, and start playing every game like it's the third."
In other Bruins news, Marc Savard participated in his first contact practice on Wednesday. Savard, who is one of the league's top playmaking centermen, has yet to play in a game this season due to post-concussion syndrome. There is still no timetable for his return to the lineup.
Boston has won its last two games on home ice, but the Bruins are just 4-4-2 as the host this year.
The Bruins won three out of four against Carolina last year and claimed victories in both home games. Boston has taken eight of nine overall in the series and has won four straight at the Garden.
