Streaking Thrashers end homestand against Bruins

Nov 28, 2010 - 3:51 PM (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers will try to complete a six-game homestand with their fifth straight victory when they welcome the struggling Boston Bruins for this evening's battle at Philips Arena.

The Thrashers, who are 7-5-1 as the host this year, began this residency with a loss to Florida on Nov. 17, but Atlanta has since posted victories over Washington, the New York Islanders, Detroit and Montreal. Atlanta has earned style points in those victories to boot, outscoring the opposition 15-2 over the last four games.

The hot streak has helped moved Atlanta into the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Thrashers have made the postseason just once since entering the league as an expansion team back in 1999.

Tonight, Atlanta will be aiming for its first five-game winning streak since the club set a franchise record with six straight victories from Mar. 6-16, 2009.

The Thrashers last played on Friday night when they notched a shutout victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Ondrej Pavelec made 25 stops to record his second shutout of the season in the 3-0 victory.

Rich Peverley scored twice, while Tobias Enstrom had a goal and an assist for the Thrashers.

"We did great things from the first faceoff," Pavelec said. "We're doing well. We can see right now we can beat everybody, especially those teams that are really hot."

Atlanta hopes to have forward Fredrik Modin back in the lineup soon. Modin, who has four goals and two assists on the year, has sat out the last six games with an upper-body injury and is questionable for this evening's contest.

The Bruins, meanwhile, enter today with three losses in their last four games and Boston was dealt a shutout Friday afternoon by the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. Cam Ward stopped 37 shots for his first shutout of the season to help the Hurricanes notch the 3-0 victory at TD Garden.

The Carolina power play, which was ranked 21st in the league coming into the game, went 3-for-3 in the contest to lead the team past the Bruins. Tim Thomas was charged with all three goals on 21 shots for Boston.

"We should be disappointed in ourselves right now," said Thomas. "We let them control the play tonight and taking those penalties killed us."

Boston has a stellar 8-2-0 record on the road this year and is playing the first of two straight away from Beantown tonight. The Bruins will also visit Philadelphia on Wednesday.

The Bruins won all four meetings against Atlanta in each of the past two seasons and have taken 10 straight games in this series. Boston has also claimed victories in its last four trips to Atlanta and has won five out of six at Philips Arena.
