Sabres get by Senators in shootout

Dec 5, 2010 - 9:10 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Thomas Vanek scored the game's lone shootout goal as Buffalo defeated Ottawa 1-0 at Scotiabank Place.

Ryan Miller recorded his 19th career shutout, stopping 32 shots for the Sabres, who have won three of their last four games.

Brian Elliott had 31 saves in his ninth career shutout for Ottawa, which has dropped eight of its last 10 games.

Vanek scored in the second round of the shootout when he ripped a point-blank slapshot that went low past Elliott.

Jason Spezza had a chance to keep the Sens alive to start the third round, but he lost control of a backhand shot attempt and the puck fluttered well wide of the net.

"We played pretty hard tonight and didn't get the result we want," said Spezza. "It's hockey. You gotta put the puck in the net."

The Senators rattled off 29 shots, while Buffalo had 26 during regulation. Elliott had to be strong to turn aside five Sabres opportunities in OT, while Miller needed to make three saves to keep the game going.
