Canucks seek fifth straight win in clash with sliding Blues

Dec 5, 2010 - 3:33 PM (Sports Network) - The Vancouver Canucks take aim at a fifth straight victory this evening as they welcome the St. Louis Blues, losers of five in a row, to Rogers Arena.

The Canucks are on their longest winning streak since a season-best six-game run from Oct. 22-Nov. 6. Their current spurt comes on the heels of a four-game slide in which they were outscored 17-7, but they have flipped the tables as of late. Vancouver is outscoring its opponents, 20-5, over its last four games and is coming off a 3-0 victory in Chicago.

After getting pulled early in the Canucks' 7-1 home loss to the Blackhawks on Nov. 20, Roberto Luongo bounced back with a 32-save shutout, his second of the season and 53rd of his career.

"A lot of things have to go right for you to get a shutout. The guys have to play well in front of you and they did that tonight," said Luongo, who is 12-8-0 with a 2.38 goals-against average in his career versus the Blues.

Henrik Sedin, Tanner Glass and Christian Ehrhoff each had a goal for the Canucks, while Daniel Sedin had two assists.

Vancouver returns home for three straight and has won two in a row as the host to up its mark at Rogers Arena to 8-2-1 this season.

Meanwhile, the Blues have matched their longest losing streak of the season after dropping their fifth game in a row last night. Jaroslav Halak made 24 saves, but was beaten by Edmonton's Taylor Hall on a breakaway 23 seconds into overtime for a 2-1 setback.

Eric Brewer forced overtime on a goal with 6:27 left in regulation, but the Blues still lost for the 10th time in 13 games overall and for the seventh time in their last eight road games.

"We got a point and we'll take that and leave the game where it is. I thought we did a lot of good things again," Brewer said. "We've got to find ways to generate some more offense and create some timely chances."

St. Louis hasn't lost six straight since a seven-game slide from Dec. 26-Jan. 7 of last season.

Halak is 2-1-0 with a 2.01 GAA in his career versus Vancouver, while backup Ty Conklin is 3-3-0 with a 2.82 GAA against them.

Last season, these two clubs split four overall meetings and two games in Vancouver, but the Blues have lost six of their last eight as the road team in this series.
