Weiss, Panthers beat Avs in OT

Dec 8, 2010 - 5:21 AM Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Stephen Weiss scored just 43 seconds into overtime to give the Florida Panthers a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche at BankAtlantic Center.

Weiss also scored in regulation, David Booth had a goal and an assist while Bill Thomas lit the lamp for the Panthers, who have taken two straight after dropping five of six. Tomas Vokoun made 22 saves for his 10th win of the season.

John-Michael Liles, Matt Duchene and Daniel Winnik each had a goal for the Avalanche, who have dropped a season-high four straight games. Craig Anderson made 21 saves in a losing effort.

"It's tough when you score a goal and they come right back and score," said Colorado coach Joe Sacco. "When you score a goal you want to keep the momentum, but we failed to do that tonight."

Moments into the extra session, Booth threw a shot on net from the right point that Anderson stopped, but Weiss grabbed the rebound and from a sharp angle at the left side threw it in for the winner.

"It was a big goal for the club and personally," said Booth. "It's been a bit of a struggle so it feels good to get it."

Thomas got the only goal of the first period when he jammed a rebound into the net from the left side at the 3:08 mark for his first goal of the season.

Colorado tied the game at the 3:42 mark of the second when Paul Stastny fired the disc from the right to the left where Liles wristed it home.

Winnik made it a 2-1 game with 2:21 left in the middle stanza as his shot was stopped, but the rebound came back to him and he swept it into the net.

Weiss, though, tied it less than two minutes later with his first goal of the game.

The Avs, got the lead back 1:59 into the third as a quick backhand from Duchene near the right circle slipped by Vokoun.

However, Booth tied it just over two minutes after as he danced around a defender and from the slot blew a wrister past Anderson for his seventh goal of the season.
