Fowler scores in shootout as Ducks edge Oilers
Dec 8, 2010 - 8:00 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Cam Fowler scored the game-winning goal in the 10th round of the shootout to lift the Anaheim Ducks over the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2, at Rexall Place.Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne scored in regulation for the Ducks, who halted their two-game skid and won for the fourth time in their last six games overall. Jonas Hiller allowed two goals on 36 shots for Anaheim.
"Obviously, we have a lot of guys who can put the puck in the back of the net," Fowler said. "And it was going to be a little while for me to get my chance, but I think now that (the coaches) can use me if we get deep down the roster there."
Ryan Jones and Dustin Penner tallied for the Oilers, who saw their four-game win streak halted but still earned at least one point for the sixth time in their last seven games (5-1-1).
Nikolai Khabibulin finished with 30 saves in the losing effort.
"We have to find a way in the shootout to score some goals and help (Khabibulin) out," Jones said. "He stood on his head for us."
Joffrey Lupul and Taylor Hall were the only goal scorers through the first nine rounds before Colin Fraser failed to beat Hiller in the first portion of Round 10. Fowler then moved in and lit the lamp with a wrist shot and the Ducks celebrated the victory.
Following a scoreless opening period, the Ducks gained a 1-0 lead 5:44 into the second on Koivu's wrist shot from the slot. It was his 10th goal of the season.
At the 6:32 mark of the third, the visitors moved ahead by two. Andy Sutton's shot from above the left circle was deflected on its way to the net and landed on the stick of Selanne, who lit the lamp with a backhander from inside the near circle.
But the Oilers scored twice in a 3:10 span later in the third stanza to tie the score.
After Jones' wrister into the upper corner of the net from the left circle cut Edmonton's deficit in half midway through the period, Penner's ninth goal at 13:39 knotted the contest.
During a power play, Kurtis Foster released a shot from the point and the save was made, but Penner collected the rebound and beat Hiller from the bottom of the right circle with a low wrister.
Oilers forward Sam Gagner missed a breakaway attempt with three minutes to play in regulation.
