Quick-strike Sharks visit Flyers

Dec 8, 2010 - 3:59 PM (Sports Network) - The San Jose Sharks were able to score two goals in a span of eight seconds in their last trip to the ice. Tonight, they will try to post two straight victories for the first time in over three weeks when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Sharks improved to 2-1-0 on a five-game road trip with Monday's 5-2 win over Detroit. That game turned when Niclas Wallin and Logan Couture scored at 4:53 and 5:01 of the second period, respectively, to hand San Jose a 3-2 lead.

It was the second-fastest span of goals in San Jose's history, coming in one second slower than the club record of seven seconds, which was first achieved by Larry DePalma and Dave Snuggerud against Buffalo on November 5, 1992.

Couture picked up a pair of goals and Dany Heatley added a goal and one assist in the victory at Joe Louis Arena.

"It's a big win. Winning in this building is fun," said Couture.

Joe Thornton also tallied for the Sharks, while Antti Niemi won by stopping 25-of-27 shots.

The Sharks will aim tonight to win consecutive games for the first time since a three-game winning streak from Nov. 11-15.

San Jose defenseman Kent Huskins has missed the last four games with an upper- body injury and he is questionable for tonight's game.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, has won its last two games following a three-game slide and tonight the club will try to end a lengthy winless streak against the Sharks. The Flyers haven't defeated San Jose since Dec. 21, 2000, going 0-7-2 with a pair of ties in 11 meetings since that victory a decade ago in Philly.

San Jose is 4-0 with a tie in its last five trips to the City of Brotherly Love. Overall, Philadelphia is 10-5-1 as the host this season and San Jose is 6-5-2 as the visiting team.

The Flyers notched wins on back-to-back days this past weekend, beating the visiting New Jersey Devils on Saturday before edging the New York Islanders the following afternoon on Long Island.

Danny Briere scored with under six minutes to play to help Philadelphia take a 3-2 decision over the Isles at Nassau Coliseum.

Andreas Nodl and Matt Carle each had a goal while Andrej Meszaros added two assists for the Flyers. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots in the win.

Bobrovsky has a stellar 14-4-2 record and 2.21 GAA this season for the Flyers, but he may get fewer starts when Michael Leighton returns from offseason back surgery. Leighton won the Flyers starting job last season and after an excellent postseason run, Philadelphia rewarded the journeyman with a two- year, $3.1 million deal.

Leighton is currently on a conditioning assignment with Philadelphia's AHL affiliate in Adirondack, but he could be activated from injured reserve in the next week.
