Quick, Kings top Flames for third straight
Dec 10, 2010 - 7:52 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Quick made 26 saves and the Los Angeles Kings held on for a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames to extend their winning streak to three games.Kyle Clifford and Anze Kopitar scored goals and the Kings earned just their second win in the last 10 meetings with Calgary.
"For whatever reason they were just tough to play against," said Kopitar, "but tonight I thought we gave a great effort for 60 minutes and we got the job done."
Olli Jokinen scored the only Flames goal on a power play with 3:21 remaining in the game, while Miikka Kiprusoff allowed two goals on 32 shots in defeat.
Clifford opened the scoring 12:08 into the first period, giving the Kings a 1-0 lead when he tipped in a pass sent on net by Wayne Simmonds.
Kiprusoff had little chance to stop the bang-bang goal, but he did make 11 saves in a scoreless second period. Quick had four stops in the stanza.
Kopitar scored on a power play 5:10 into the third period to make it 2-0 Los Angeles. The goal followed Jack Johnson's slap shot from the blue line, which left a loose puck in front and an open net for Kopitar to score on.
Quick's chance for a second shutout of the season was spoiled by Jokinen's power play goal in the final minutes.
Jokinen capitalized on a loose puck near the goal line after Anton Babchuk's shot from the point got behind Quick, but the Flames were unable to find the equalizer in the closing moments.
Calgary head coach Brent Sutter was unhappy with his team's play, particularly their lack of "push back" in the second period when the Kings still only led by a goal.
But "we had urgency in our game the last seven minutes after we were down a couple," said Sutter.
