Giguere leads Leafs over Canadiens
Dec 12, 2010 - 4:54 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 22 shots as the Toronto Maple Leafs earned a 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens in an Original Six battle at Air Canada Centre.Tomas Kaberle had a goal and an assist while Kris Versteeg and Phil Kessel both added a goal for the Maple Leafs, who snapped a two-game slide.
"It was a big win for us and the fans," said Kaberle. "We knew they were coming in off a game and wanted to get on them early. It was a big two points for us."
Michael Cammalleri scored the goal while Alex Auld gave up two goals on 22 shots for the Canadiens, who have lost their past two games.
"It obviously wasn't coming easy for us tonight," said Cammalleri. "We were able to dig and put ourselves in a spot to come back, but we couldn't get that other goal."
Toronto got on the board 7:38 in when Kessel's initial shot from the slot hit off the backboard and he was able to stuff in the bounce from the right side for his 11th goal of the year.
The Leafs made it a 2-0 game at the 10:35 mark as Fredrik Sjostrom sent a pass from the right circle to the left where Kaberle ripped a low shot between the pads of Auld for his first goal of the season.
Cammalleri got his team on the board with 5:22 to play in the second when he grabbed the loose puck in the high slot and blasted it past Giguere.
Montreal got a power play at the 7:11 mark of the third when Tyler Bozak was called for hooking, but the Maple Leafs were able to keep them from tying the game.
The Habs pulled Giguere for the extra attacker later, but Versteeg put the puck into the open net to seal the win.
