Canucks beat shot-challenged Oilers

Dec 13, 2010 - 5:51 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Roberto Luongo needed to make only 11 saves to help Vancouver beat Edmonton, 2-1, in one the worst Oilers' offensive games in franchise history.

Henrik Sedin scored a goal and handed out an assist for the Canucks, who have won six of eight. Alexandre Burrows also scored in the victory, while Daniel Sedin had a pair of assists.

"They were outstanding," Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said of the Sedins. "That's probably the best game they've played so far this year, and we need them to play that way."

Jordan Eberle spoiled the shutout bid with five seconds left for the Oilers, who registered just 12 shots on net in their first regulation loss over seven games. The franchise-low is 11 shots, done twice -- most recently in 1999.

Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves in the hard-luck loss.

"Sooner or later when you do stuff like that, you're not going to win games," said Edmonton's Andrew Cogliano. "When you play a good team like Vancouver and a good goalie like Luongo -- when you don't get shots on him, pretty much at any point of the game, you have no chance to score".

Edmonton was offensively inept in the third period all weekend, having been outshot by a 17-1 margin against Tampa Bay on Friday. Combined with one shot on Sunday, they've been outshout, 31-2, in the third period of the past two games combined.

Vancouver got on the board with some nifty passing in the first period from the Sedin twins. Henrik Sedin grabbed the puck near the right end boards in the offensive zone and dished to his brother across the ice in the left circle. Burrows was stationed near the left post and took a feed from Daniel Sedin and scored 6:12 into the game.

Edmonton had a chance to tie it a minute later, but Magnus Paajarvi misfired on a penalty shot.

Luongo made just four saves in the first period, and Henrik Sedin doubled the Canucks' lead with his fifth goal 6:37 into the second.

After Luongo made seven more stops in the second period, he was hardly tested in the third. Vancouver dominated play in the final 20 minutes, registering 14 shots on net; Edmonton didn't get a puck on Luongo until Eberle scored a power play goal with five seconds remaining.
