Jokinen, Flames get past Toronto

Dec 17, 2010 - 5:59 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Olli Jokinen posted a goal and two assists as Calgary rode a brief second-period burst to a 5-2 decision over Toronto at the Saddledome.

Niklas Hagman added a goal and a helper while Alex Tanguay and Rene Bourque also scored for the Flames, who have won two straight games.

Miikka Kiprusoff halted 17-of-19 shots for the victory.

Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski scored for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped three of five.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere got the start but was pulled after yielding four goals on 24 shots through two periods. Jonas Gustavsson finished the contest and made eight saves.

"We weren't very good for two periods and the only reason it was 1-1 (after one) was because of Jiggy's (Giguere) play," said Toronto head coach Ron Wilson of his club's failure to play consistently. "He took away two or three sure goals from them."

Calgary seized control of the contest with three goals in a 57-second span late in the second period.

Tanguay put the Flames ahead at 15:17, then at 15:50, Jokinen redirected an Anton Babchuk feed at the left post on the power play for a 3-1 game.

It was 4-1 for the home squad at 16:14 when Bourque handled the puck himself during a 2-on-1 break and beat Giguere to the short-side post.

"I hope we can provide that more often," Hagman said of the winning burst. "We did all the little things right, throwing pucks at the net and it was nice to get those goals in a bunch."

Hagman made it a four-goal Calgary edge with 2 1/2 minutes played in the third period, but Grabovski answered for Toronto at 8:45.

Jarome Iginla was awarded a penalty shot with 1:31 to play, but since he was at the end of his shift when he was dragged down, was only able to muster a weak wrister easily stopped by Gustavsson.

Kulemin and Mikael Backlund scored within a 57-second span and the clubs were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Game Notes

Calgary has won four of five and seven of the last 10 over Toronto...Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf returned to Calgary for the first time since the Flames dealt him away on January 31...He finished with three shots and was a plus-one in nearly 22 1/2 minutes of ice time.
