Canucks rout Jackets to extend point streak
Dec 24, 2010 - 5:33 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Raffi Torres tallied two goals and Henrik Sedin posted a goal and three assists in Vancouver's 7-3 rout of Columbus at Nationwide Arena.Alexandre Burrows and Daniel Sedin both had a goal and two assists for Vancouver, which has recorded a point in eight straight games. Christian Ehrhoff and Ryan Kesler both netted goals in the win, while Cory Schneider stopped 24 of 27 shots.
R.J. Umberger potted two goals for the Blue Jackets, who have lost five of their last six games. Tom Sestito also had a goal in the loss.
Mathieu Garon allowed six goals on 22 shots before he was pulled in the second period in favor of Steve Mason, who ended the game with seven saves on eight shots.
"We weren't good and we just fed into that," Umberger said. "We made them look better than they were. I mean they played good, but we made them look better."
Vancouver started its scoring barrage with three first-period goals.
The first came after an offensive zone face-off win. Daniel Sedin carried the puck in tight and tried to jam it past Garon. The puck bounced around near the right side of the crease until Burrows scored for a 1-0 lead at 9:08.
Ehrhoff's goal made it 2-0 with 7:56 left to play in the first period. The score was set up by Henrik Sedin, who sent a cross-ice pass to Ehrhoff at the right circle, where he finished it with a rising wrister that found the far corner of the net.
Just over a minute later, Andrew Albert ripped a shot from the left point and Torres redirected it past Garon for the third goal.
The Canucks built on their first-period edge just over four minutes into the second when Alexander Edler fed Daniel Sedin for a one-timer from the right side of the crease.
The rout continued on Vancouver's 2-on-1 rush nearly nine minutes in the same period when Jannik Hansen floated a pass to Kesler, who wristed it past a diving Garon. Henrik Sedin added another to make the score 6-0, which sent Garon to the bench.
The Jackets finally got on the board on Umberger's breakaway goal with 4:11 left to play in the second.
Torres added his second goal of the night on the power play with a deflection in the slot at the 6:46 mark of the final period for a 7-1 score.
Columbus rallied too little too late as Umberger and Sestito both tallied in the third to make up the final score.
