Lecavalier nets OT winner as Lightning top Thrashers
Dec 27, 2010 - 3:56 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Vincent Lecavalier's second goal of the game came 1:13 into overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena."It feels good," Lecavalier said. "Anytime you put it in the back of the net it just kind of boosts your confidence. They weren't the prettiest of goals, but I'll definitely take them."
On a power play in the extra session thanks to a Dustin Byfuglien boarding call late in regulation, Martin St. Louis held the puck at the low right circle and flipped it over to Lecavalier, who chipped it past Ondrej Pavelec for the win.
Steven Stamkos had a goal and an assist while Dan Ellis made 26 stops for the Lightning, who have won two straight and six of seven.
Zach Bogosian and Freddy Modin each had a goal for the Thrashers, who have dropped three straight. Pavelec stopped 31 shots in the loss.
"We had our chance to win the game," Pavelec said. "We just gave it to them. A point is very good though."
The Lightning got the only goal of the first period 8:14 into the frame. Skating down the right wing, Ryan Malone got a backhander on net that Pavelec stopped, but the rebound sat out front and Stamkos was able to backhand it in for his 28th goal.
The Thrashers tied the game 6:03 into the second as Anthony Stewart left a drop pass at the top of the right circle for Bogosian, who blasted the one- timer past Ellis for his third goal of the season.
Tampa, though, answered three minutes later when Lecavalier snapped home a rebound off a Simon Gagne shot from the left side for the 2-1 advantage.
Atlanta tied the game with 3:43 to play in the third. Skating down the left side, Jim Slater got a shot on net that saw Ellis make the save, but the rebound kicked out front and Modin was there to chip home the rebound for his seventh goal of the year.
Tampa's Victor Hedman was called for delay of game with 1:13 to play in regulation when he flipped the puck over the glass, but Byfuglien nullified the power play a minute later with his boarding call.
