Ward, Hurricanes silence Senators
Dec 30, 2010 - 4:29 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Cam Ward stopped all 37 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season as the Carolina Hurricanes dominated the Ottawa Senators, 4-0, at Scotiabank Place.Zach Boychuk had two goals while Patrick Dwyer added a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, who have taken their past two games. Erik Cole scored the other goal in the win.
"I really wanted to make an impression cause I was moved up to the third line," said Boychuk. "There was an injury that opened up an opportunity for me and I wanted to take advantage of that to show what I can do."
Brian Elliott allowed all four goals on 31 shots as the Senators had a two- game win streak stopped.
"We need these points and this loss stings," said Ottawa left wing Nick Foligno. "It's unfortunate from out standpoint that we weren't prepared tonight cause these things come back to haunt you."
Carolina got the only goal it needed 9:24 in when Boychuk used a wraparound from the right side to get the puck past Elliott for his first goal of the season.
Boychuk needed less than four minutes to net his second goal of the season. Tuomo Ruutu worked a turnover in the Ottawa end, skated to the low right circle where he dished it off to Boychuk, who put a well-placed shot past Elliott for a 2-0 advantage.
Cole's marker with 4:46 to play in the second, his eighth of the year, made it a 3-0 game while Ward stopped 11 shots in the frame.
Dwyer made it a 4-0 game at the 4:32 mark of the third to account for the final score as Ward turned aside 18 shots in the frame to preserve the shutout.
