Islanders keep rolling in win over Flames; DiPietro hurt

Jan 4, 2011 - 5:25 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Matt Moulson and John Tavares each posted two goals as the New York Islanders remained hot with a 5-2 win over Calgary at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Tavares also had an assist, while P.A. Parenteau and Andrew McDonald each added two helpers for the Islanders, who have won three straight and six of their last seven. Michael Grabner potted a goal for the victors.

New York netminder Rick DiPietro left the game in the second period with an adductor strain and was replaced by rookie goaltender Nathan Lawson, who made just his second NHL appearance. DiPeitro finished with 13 saves, while Lawson rounded out the win stopping 28-of-29 shots.

"It was a good all-around win," Tavares said. "It was great for Lawson to come in and do his thing coming in cold. Everyone did their role tonight."

David Moss registered both of the Flames' goals as they came into the game red hot, too, by winning four straight. Henrik Karlsson surrendered four goals on 25 shots in the loss.

"We didn't have a good start," said Flames defenseman Robyn Regehr. "We gave up way too many high quality scoring chances that they capitalized on and we all have to be better than that."

The Isles attacked just 12 seconds into their first power play of the game after Tim Jackman was called for interference on the goalkeeper at the 3:25 mark. Parenteau worked the puck down low to Tavares, who took it in tight and flipped it over Karlsson's leg pad for the opening goal.

It took a little under five minutes for New York to extend the lead to two, when Tavares centered it to the right slot to Parenteau, who set up Moulson's tap in from the far post.

Calgary got on the board at the 11:37 mark when Moss sent a wrist shot past DiPietro. However, Tavares tallied his second power-play goal of the night to round out the high-scoring first period and give New York a 3-1 edge heading into the second period.

The lead grew to three just over three minutes into the middle frame when Travis Hamonic rifled a wrister from the right point, which was redirected by Moulson into the net.

DiPetro left the goal seven minutes into the second period after coming up limp when he reached for Jarome Iginla's wrister and Lawson came into the game.

Calgary took just 6 1/2 minutes to take advantage of the goalie change when Moss pounded home a rebound off of Jackman's shot from the right circle to make it a 4-2 game.

The 27-year-old Calgary native, however, held strong between the pipes as the Flames peppered Lawson with 15 shots in the final 20 minutes.

Grabner added an empty-netter with 66 seconds left to ice the game for the visitors.

Game Notes
