Coyotes use big third period to beat Leafs

Jan 14, 2011 - 8:10 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Lauri Korpikoski scored a goal and tallied an assist as Phoenix scored four third-period goals for a 5-1 victory over Toronto in the teams' lone meeting of the season.

Keith Yandle notched an empty-netter and two assists while Taylor Pyatt, Radim Vrbata, and Shane Doan all lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who have won five of their last six games.

Ilya Bryzgalov was solid between the pipes by stopping 28-of-29 shots for the victors.

"[Bryzgalov] was really good," Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett said. "These are very important games to us."

Colby Armstrong notched the lone goal for the Maple Leafs, who had a four-game winning streak snapped but still finished a four-game road trip 3-1-0. James Reimer surrendered four goals on 20 shots in the loss.

The Coyotes got on the board just over two minutes into the game with a power- play goal off of Nikolai Kulemin's high-sticking penalty.

With the Phoenix offense patiently working the disc around the perimeter, Ray Whitney sent a hard pass from the top of the left circle to the right side of the net. Vrbata was there to chip the puck into the open net.

The score stayed that way through the second but a late period scuffle yielded five different penalties, including Clarke MacArthur's holding the stick and roughing penalties.

That put the Coyotes on a power play heading into the third period and they made it count by scoring just 1:39 into the final frame. The goal came from Doan's blast from the left circle that went low past Reimer.

The lead grew to 3-0 just over thee minutes later when Yandle centered to Pyatt, who ripped a one-timer from the high slot that went top shelf.

Korpikoski put the game away, 4-0, for Phoenix by finishing Mikkel Boedker's feed on a 2-on-1 rush nearing the mid point of the third period.

Armstrong spoiled Bryzgalov's shutout with 3:52 remaining in regulation when he tipped in a rebound. Yandle added an empty-netter with 41 seconds remaining to make up the final score.

"We had a number of scoring chances," Toronto head coach Ron Wilson said. "I thought we played well, but it slipped out of our hands in the third period."

Game Notes

Despite their current run, the Leafs are still just 9-11-1 overall on the road...Bryzgalov is a perfect 4-0-0 in his career versus Toronto...Whitney had two assists in the win...There were 16 penalties in the game. Toronto was 0- for-5 on the power play, while Phoenix scored twice on five advantages.
