Franzen's OT goal leads Wings over Jackets
Jan 16, 2011 - 4:22 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Johan Franzen's goal just 45 seconds into overtime gave Detroit a 6-5 win over Columbus to split a home-and-home set.Franzen took a Henrik Zetterberg pass into the right circle and sent a rising slapper that went over Steve Mason's left shoulder for the win.
Drew Miller scored a goal and tallied two assists as the Red Wings snapped a two-game losing streak, including a 3-2 shootout loss to Columbus on Friday. Kris Draper and Jonathan Ericsson each posted a goal and a helper, while Brian Rafalski and Valtteri Filppula each lit the lamp in the win.
Joey MacDonald turned away 25 shots in the win.
"We won the game and that's all that matters," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "Joey (MacDonald) came up to backup and then the next thing you know he's starting and he did a good job to help us get the win."
Rick Nash had a goal and two assists for the Blue Jackets, who have dropped six of their last seven contests. Grant Clitsome and Derick Brassard each notched a goal and an assist while Matt Calvert an R.J. Umberger both scored in the defeat.
Mason got the loss after surrendering six goals on 34 shots.
"We've seen a lot of heart in this team the last couple of games," Umberger said. "We have to keep moving forward. We'll take these points and keep working hard."
Columbus tied the game for a third time, 4-4, just 70 seconds into the final frame on a power-play goal. The offense rotated to the puck to Umberger and he sent a blast that found the back of the net.
The lead swayed to Detroit on Draper's goal at the 3:32 mark. The play developed by Miller's slap shot from the right circle. The rebound skipped toward the right slot where Draper was able to pull off a one-handed tip in.
Nash found the equalizer with on an empty-net advantage with 64 seconds remaining in regulation. Clitsome corralled the puck off an offensive zone win and slipped it to Nash at the right point. He then ripped a shot which traveled through traffic and sailed high past MacDonald.
Columbus took a quick 2-0 lead in the first 4:12 of the game. The first came just 33 seconds in when Brassard banged home a rebound off of Nash's shot. Clitsome's shot from the point which was deflected into the net by the skate of Wings defenseman Justin Abdelkader made up the second goal.
But the game played out similarly to Friday's contest as Detroit rallied back to tie it. Filppula sent a wrister past Mason to put Detroit on the board with 3:26 left to play in the first. Less than two minutes later, Darren Helm centered a pass from the left corner and a charging Miller chipped the puck in the net for the tying goal.
Calvert regained the edge, 3-2, for the Blue Jackets just three minutes into the second period by beating MacDonald on the breakaway.
The Red Wings responded, though, with two straight goals again. The first came from Ericsson just a minute after Calvert's goal and Rafalski gave Detroit a 4-3 edge at the eight minute mark of the second stanza.
The fourth goal was set up by a 3-on-2 rush, Miller dropped the puck off to the trailing Rafalski, who finished the play with a sharp wrister.
Game Notes
Draper collected his 200th career assist...MacDonald got the start after starting goaltender Jimmy Howard left Friday's game with a bruised knee. The Red Wings were already without veteran goaltender Chris Osgood, who is out for six-to-eight weeks after recently undergoing surgery for a sports hernia. The injury bug has sunk its teeth deeply into Detroit as Tomas Holmstom is expected to miss four weeks after breaking his hand on Friday and Howard is day to day. The injuries are piling for the Wings who already have lost Mike Modano, Pavel Datsyuk, Danny Cleary and Brad Stuart for extended periods of time...Nash has a four-game point streak...Helm had two assists and Jakub Voracek had two helpers in the loss.
