Predators rally, beat Chicago in SO

Jan 16, 2011 - 5:35 AM Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Marcel Goc supplied the lone goal in the first round of the shootout, as Nashville rallied to beat Chicago, 3-2, in the front end of a home-and-home set at Bridgestone Arena.

Goc slipped the puck underneath Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford after Nashville's Pekka Rinne turned away Jonathan Toews to begin the extra segment. Rinne then stopped a Patrick Kane bid before Patrick Sharp, who was denied by Rinne on a breakaway late in overtime, missed the net with his attempt.

Jerred Smithson and Shea Weber scored 2:34 apart in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit for Nashville, which has won seven of its last eight games. Rinne made 31 saves.

"Big win. What a turnaround," Rinne said.

Tomas Kopecky and Viktor Stalberg lit the lamp for the Blackhawks, while Crawford, coming off consecutive shutouts, stopped 24 shots.

Chicago was aiming for a fourth straight win.

Smithson put Nashville on the board at the 9:46 mark of the third period, taking a backhand pass from Nick Spaling and firing a shot past Crawford. It was the first goal allowed by Crawford in over 176 minutes.

It didn't take the Predators long to solve him again as Weber let go a one- timer from the point at 12:20.

"They had a good third period. We should have nailed it," said Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville.

Kopecky opened the scoring with a power-play tally at 14:59 of the first period. Stalberg made it 2-0 at 4:29 of the middle stanza.
