Hurricanes try to rebound from embarrassing loss vs. Bruins

Jan 18, 2011 - 4:02 PM (Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes were dealt an embarrassing loss Monday in Boston and will try to exact a measure of revenge at RBC Center tonight, when they host the Bruins in the finale of a home-and-home series.

The Bruins simply destroyed Carolina in a matinee at TD Garden on Monday, as defenseman Zdeno Chara recorded the first hat trick of his career in the 7-0 blowout.

Chara became just the fourth defenseman to record a hat trick in Bruins history. The 2008-09 Norris Trophy winner joined Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque and Glen Wesley for that distinction.

"It's always nice to say I've done it, that I finally had a hat trick," said Chara, who now has 10 tallies this year, allowing him to reach double digits in goals for the seventh time in his career.

Boston, which leads the Northeast Division by two points over Montreal, has won four of its last five games and the Bruins bounced back on Monday after dropping a 3-2 home decision to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Patrice Bergeron picked up a goal and one assist for the Bruins, who recorded a sizeable shutout victory for the second time in less than a week. Boston defeated the visiting Ottawa Senators, 6-0, last Tuesday.

Gregory Campbell, Mark Stuart and Michael Ryder also lit the lamp for Boston and Tim Thomas made 31 saves to record his NHL-leading seventh shutout, moving him one ahead of Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers.

Cam Ward started in net for Carolina but was yanked after yielding two goals on five shots in 11-plus minutes. Justin Peters was shelled for five scores the rest of the way for the Hurricanes, who have dropped two of three since a three-game winning streak.

"They got on a roll, from the start they felt good about themselves and away they went," Carolina head coach Paul Maurice admitted. "It's important for our team to answer back and show some character."

With Monday's win, Boston defeated the Hurricanes for the ninth time in the last 11 overall meetings between the clubs. The Bruins have also won four of five and five out of seven in Raleigh.

Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference is questionable for today's game with an upper-body injury. Boston forward Milan Lucic and defensemen Steven Kampfer and Mark Stuart all returned from injuries on Monday.

Boston is 13-5-4 as the road team this season, while the Hurricanes are 11-7-2 as the host.
