Grabovski, Leafs rally past Ducks

Jan 21, 2011 - 6:17 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Mikhail Grabovski scored twice during a four- goal rally which helped Toronto defeat Anaheim, 5-2, at Air Canada Centre.

Clarke MacArthur played an active role in the Maple Leafs' offense with a goal and two assists, while Tyler Bozak and Carl Gunnarsson also tallied in the win.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 26-of-28 shots against his former team and helped the Leafs bounce back from an embarrassing 7-0 loss to the New York Rangers on Wednesday. Toronto also halted a three-game slide.

"It's always fun to play your old team," Giguere said. "I was a little nervous before the game. I wanted to win this one. As a team, we needed to wash away what happened yesterday and there's no better way to do that then come out and get a big win."

Dan Sexton and Brandon McMillan each posted a goal for the Ducks, who had a two-game win streak snapped.

Jonas Hiller surrendered five goals on 37 shots in the losing effort.

"We played about 12 minutes of hockey tonight," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "You can't expect to play 12 minutes of hockey and win in the NHL."

Toronto pulled away with four straight goals that spanned two periods.

Gunnarsson's third goal of the season with 6:50 left to play in the second stanza tied the game, 2-2. MacArthur circled behind the net and sent a pass to the point where Gunnarsson lasered it home.

Toronto took its first lead of the game just three minutes later when Phil Kessel fed Bozak with a nice backhand pass from the right neutral-zone boards. Bozak stopped just inside the near circle and drilled a slap shot past Hiller's glove side.

Grabovski potted an insurance goal just under six minutes into the final frame thanks to the unwarranted play of Ducks forward Bobby Ryan. After a Toronto offensive-zone turnover, Ryan coughed the puck up in front of the net and Grabovski wisely poked the puck past the unsuspecting Anaheim netminder.

Toronto scored its fourth straight goal at the 11:40 mark of the third to counter an Anaheim scoring chance when a shot deflected off the crossbar. Moments later, MacArthur rushed down the length of the ice and centered it to Grabovski, who kicked it to his forehand and finished a wrister just inside the right post.

Anaheim's first strike came nearly eight minutes into the game after Lubomir Visnovsky brought the puck down to the right corner and shuffled it behind the net to Sexton. He then carried the disc to the bottom of the left circle and fired a sharp-angled wrister over Giguere's left shoulder.

Toronto knotted the game at the 11:43 mark of the opening period on a 2-on-1 break. MacArthur sent a quick pass to Kessel, whose shot was initially blocked by Hiller. A trailing MacArthur was able to clean up the mess, though, and chipped the rebound into the net.

The next tally came at the 5:21 mark of the second period on a Ducks' 2-on-1 rush. McMillan and Joffery Lupul led the charge, which was finished on McMillan's shot from the left slot. Giguere appeared to have stopped the shot, but the puck trickled between his legs and barely crossed the goal line.

Game Notes

Giguere spent parts of nine seasons in Anaheim before getting dealt to Toronto last January. His tenure with the Ducks included a Conn Smythe Trophy in 2003 and a Stanley Cup title in 2007. Giguere is Anaheim's all-time leader in wins (206), shutouts (32) and games played by a goaltender (447)...The Leafs have surrendered the first goal in seven straight games...Kessel finished with two assists...The Ducks are 9-13-3 as the guest this season, while the Maple Leafs improved to 10-10-4 at home.
