Sharks top Canucks on Pavelski's SO goal

Jan 21, 2011 - 8:14 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Joe Pavelski scored in the second round of the shootout, as the San Jose Sharks snuck past the Vancouver Canucks, 2-1, at Rogers Arena.

Logan Couture scored in regulation for the Sharks, who have won three in a row since a six-game skid.

Antti Niemi made 36 saves for San Jose, which placed goaltender Antero Niittymaki on injured reserve Thursday. The Sharks signed University of British Columbia goalie Jordan White to a one-game amateur tryout prior to the game.

San Jose set a franchise road record with 25 shots in the second period.

Henrik Sedin scored the lone goal for the Canucks, who have lost three in a row. Roberto Luongo turned aside 44-of-45 shots in defeat.

"I thought we had a pretty good first period and I don't know what happened in the second," said Luongo. "They were throwing pucks from everywhere, which is good for me, I was able to get into a good comfort zone and I was tracking the puck well."

The Sedin brothers hooked up at the 11:08 mark of the first period to give Vancouver an early lead. Daniel carried the puck into the zone before dishing off to Henrik, whose backhander beat Niemi.

San Jose was only able to score once in the second despite its 25-shot attack. At the 13:46 mark, Couture stole the puck away from a Vancouver player in the slot and quickly fired a shot on net. Luongo made the initial save, but Couture jammed home his own rebound to make it 1-1.

Luongo made nine saves in the third, while Niemi stopped eight shots.

Just 47 seconds into overtime, San Jose's Dan Boyle was sent to the penalty box for roughing. The Canucks failed to capitalize.

Vancouver leads the season-series with San Jose, 2-1. The Sharks had lost two straight at Rogers Arena...Forwards Ben Eager and Kyle Wellwood both made their San Jose debuts on Thursday. Eager came over in a trade with Atlanta for a fifth-round draft pick in 2011, while Wellwood was claimed off waivers on Tuesday after signing with St. Louis the previous day...Sharks forward Scott Nichol served the first of a four-game suspension for a hit to the head of Phoenix defenseman David Schlemko. Ryane Clowe (undisclosed) also missed the contest...The 25 shots allowed by Vancouver was three shy of a franchise record for one period, set by the Canucks in their inaugural season, 1970-71...San Jose forward John McCarthy returned to the lineup after missing 17 games with an upper-body injury.
