Anisimov's goal lifts Rangers past Capitals in SO

Jan 25, 2011 - 4:25 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Artem Anisimov scored the decisive shootout goal, and the New York Rangers rallied to beat the Washington Capitals, 2-1, at Verizon Center.

After New York goalie Martin Biron turned away rookie Marcus Johansson to begin the fourth round, Anisimov secured the extra point for the Rangers by beating Washington freshman Braden Holtby with a move to the backhand.

The Blueshirts tied the game on Marian Gaborik's 16th goal of the season at the 13:19 mark of the third period.

"Even though [we] were down going into the third, we just stayed with our game," said Rangers head coach John Tortorella.

Biron made 22 saves for New York, which has won three of its last four games and improved to 17-9-1 on the road.

Matt Hendricks lit the lamp in the second period for the Capitals, who registered a point in their fifth straight contest (3-0-2). Holtby stopped 28 shots.

New York got on the board with 6:41 to go in regulation on a tally that survived a video review. Holtby stopped Brian Boyle's bid from the right point, but the rebound pinballed off Gaborik and fluttered over the Washington netminder.

The Capitals, who entered play three points behind Tampa Bay for first place in the Southeast Division, grabbed the lead 1:27 into the middle stanza. Johansson held the puck at the right point and whipped a cross-ice pass that a streaking Hendricks deflected past Biron.

"You score your goals by shooting the puck and going to the net," said Washington head coach Bruce Boudreau. "We just didn't do it enough."

Game Notes

The Rangers upped their record to 7-12-3 when trailing after two periods...Washington fell to 16-5-6 at home...Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.
