Coyotes take on Oilers in the desert
Jan 25, 2011 - 4:33 PM (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Coyotes will try to get on track before the upcoming All-Star break as they go for a sixth straight series victory over the Edmonton Oilers this evening at Jobing.com Arena.Phoenix has lost three of its last four games and sits sixth overall in the Western Conference with 57 points, one back of Anaheim. The Coyotes picked up a 2-0 victory at Los Angeles on Thursday, but dropped the back end of the home-and-home series, 4-3, on Saturday.
The Kings jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first period, but a pair of goals from Lee Stempniak around a Martin Hanzal tally tied the game. However, Los Angeles got the game-winner early in the third frame.
"They came out and took it to us right from the start," said Stempniak, who has five goals in his last five games. "We give ourselves some credit for coming back and making it a game at the end but it is tough to come back from a hole like that."
Keith Yandle extended his point streak to seven games, amassing a goal and nine assists over the run, while Ilya Bryzgalov had 29 saves.
Phoenix's blue line also took another hit in the loss. Already without Ed Jovanovski for a fifth straight game, Derek Morris sat out Saturday's game and Michal Rozsival suffered an injury during the second period. All three defenders have lower-body injuries.
Phoenix has lost three straight at home, but has won four straight as the host against Edmonton. The Coyotes recorded a 5-0 victory the last time the clubs met at Jobing.com Arena on Nov. 23, with Hanzal and Stempniak both scoring twice and Bryzgalov making 23 saves.
Bryzgalov is 7-5-0 with a 3.09 goals-against average in his career versus the Oilers.
Devan Dubnyk gave up all five goals on 34 shots in that one and he got the start on Sunday over the struggling Nikolai Khabibulin, who has lost 10 straight starts and hasn't won since Dec. 16. Dubnyk could not reverse his club's fortunes, making 26 saves in a 3-2 shootout loss to Nashville.
Edmonton went winless on a three-game homestand and has dropped five in a row and 14 of 16 (2-11-3).
Taylor Hall and Andrew Cogliano each lit the lamp for the Oilers. Hall's goal was his 15th of the season and third in six games.
"We felt that this was a game we were in for sure," said Cogliano. "We could have had it, there was a good effort out there. But it came down to a shootout and it didn't go our way."
Edmonton, which has lost seven of eight at home, has 36 points on the season, just one more than New Jersey for the fewest in the NHL.
Dubnyk is 0-1-1 with a 3.84 GAA vs Phoenix, while Khabibulin is 9-3-1 with a 1.82 GAA.
