Sabres down Sens in OT
Jan 26, 2011 - 4:54 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Shaone Morrisonn scored his first goal of the season 1:59 into overtime to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place. The Senators pulled even on a power-play goal at the 13:56 mark of the third period that Buffalo netminder Ryan Miller felt should have been disallowed.
In the extra session, Morrisonn accepted a Jason Pominville pass from the right corner and Brian Elliott made the initial save on the Sabres defenseman. Morrisonn continued to drive the net and slipped his own rebound between the legs of Elliott.
Paul Byron and Jochen Hecht also tallied for Buffalo, which has won four of its last five games. Thomas Vanek collected two assists, while Miller finished with 27 saves.
Elliott stopped 23 shots for the Senators, who lost for the 12th time in their last 13 games.
Down by a goal, Ottawa defenseman Sergei Gonchar fired a slap shot from the right point and Senators forward Nick Foligno knocked down Miller, who didn't have a chance to make a save. Gonchar's tally stood despite protest from Miller and the rest of the Sabres.
Foligno provided his opinion of the play, saying he didn't interfere with the goaltender.
"I'm just battling to get to the front of the net," said Foligno. "They can say all they want. It was a battle in front. I hit [Miller] after the puck went in the net."
A Buffalo turnover in its own zone resulted in a 2-on-1 for the Senators. Chris Kelly maintained possession as he drifted in from the right circle. Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers, thinking pass, dropped to one knee to block the lane, but that allowed Kelly to cut to the net and slip the puck past Miller at the 4:28 mark of the first period.
Byron, an Ottawa native playing in his second NHL game, tied the score midway through the opening frame with his first goal, converting a feed from fellow rookie Tyler Ennis.
On the rush, Hecht whipped a backhander from the right circle past Elliott to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead with 4:11 left in the first.
