Oilers edge Coyotes on late goal
Jan 26, 2011 - 5:31 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Dustin Penner scored the game-winning goal with 21.3 seconds remaining in regulation, and the Edmonton Oilers clipped the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-3.The victory came in dramatic fashion, as Penner lit the lamp on a one-timer from the high slot. Edmonton defenseman Theo Peckham was called for slashing 11 seconds later, giving Phoenix a chance to force overtime. The Coyotes pulled goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to create a 6-on-4 advantage, but they weren't able to muster a quality scoring opportunity.
Taylor Hall, who set up Penner, and Linus Omark tallied 72 seconds apart earlier in the third period for the Oilers, who snapped a five-game winless streak. Devan Dubnyk made 24 saves in the win.
"In the past we might have given up too much ice to our opponent," said Edmonton head coach Tom Renney. "Tonight, I thought we kept pressing."
Scottie Upshall scored two goals for Phoenix, which has dropped four of five. Bryzgalov was beaten four times on 35 shots.
"It's a disappointing loss, that's for sure. Very disappointing," said Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett. "There's some games when you feel like you're committed, you play hard, you do things that allow you to win. Tonight, we didn't do enough of that."
Upshall's power-play tally opened the scoring 5:27 into the contest, then Kyle Turris gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead at the 1:54 mark of the second period. Jean-Francois Jacques put Edmonton on the board at 7:11 of the middle stanza.
Hall pulled the Oilers even on the power play when his centering pass deflected in off the skate of Phoenix defenseman Sami Lepisto. The visitors went up 3-2 on Omark's goal at 4:08.
Upshall's second marker tied the score at 8:29.
