Luongo, Kesler lead Canucks to big win over Coyotes
Feb 3, 2011 - 6:22 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Roberto Luongo made 23 saves for his third shutout of the season while Ryan Kesler scored twice to help the Vancouver Canucks take a 6-0 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.Mason Raymond had a goal and an assist while Alexandre Burrows, Jannik Hansen and Cody Hodgson all scored for the Canucks, who have won four straight.
"It was a great night for the team in general," said Luongo. "We played a full 60 minutes out there and really limited their chances while capitalizing on our opportunities. We took the game over in the second and the third."
Ilya Bryzgalov was pulled in the third period after allowing five goals on 31 shots for the Coyotes, who have dropped four of their last five. Jason LaBarbera played the final eight-plus minutes and gave up a goal on two shots.
"There's been a few games lately where we're not playing well," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "We're making brutal mistakes and sometimes the goaltenders clean them up and at times he doesn't. We're not getting anything cleaned up and making mistakes in front."
The first and only goal of the first period was scored by Burrows just 3:46 in while Luongo stopped nine shots in the frame.
Vancouver made it a 2-0 game 1:38 into the second. Lee Sweatt blasted a one- timer from the right circle off a drop pass and Bryzgalov came up with the save, but the puck sat out front and Hansen was there to bang home the rebound.
Hodgson's first career goal came at the 12:06 mark of the second as he fought through the middle with the puck and from the right circle flung it into the net.
The Canucks took a 4-0 lead 6:41 into the third on a 2-on-1 break as Kesler skated down the right wing, used the toe-drag to get around the defender and lasered a shot into the right corner of the net.
Raymond scored five minutes later and Kesler notched his 30th goal of the seasons with 2 1/2 minutes to play to account for the final score.
