Blues hold on to down Edmonton
Feb 5, 2011 - 5:22 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Brad Boyes posted the winning score in the second period as St. Louis tripped up Edmonton, 5-3, at Scottrade Center.Brad Winchester added an insurance tally in the third for the Blues, who put an end to a four-game losing streak.
Alex Pietrangelo, Matt D'Agostini and T.J. Oshie also lit the lamp to back a 29-save performance from Ty Conklin.
"We've got balance and the depth, it's no longer a situation where we have to rely on just one line," said St. Louis head coach Davis Payne. "That's been a what we've been hoping for here to turn things around."
Taylor Hall, Theo Peckham and Sam Gagner scored for the Oilers, who have lost three in a row and eight of their last nine.
"The talk between the second and third was about us and what we needed to do," said Hall. "We wanted to force the puck deep and keep them playing in their own end, but we weren't able to do that and it cost us."
Devan Dubnyk was torched for all five goals on 26 shots.
St. Louis extended its slim one-goal edge to three goals late in the second period.
D'Agostini made it 3-1 on the power play at 12:19 when he stood in front of Dubnyk and tipped in a shot from Nikita Nikitin, and Boyes pushed the home team's edge to 4-1 at 13:46 when he tapped in a loose puck at the left post.
Hall brought the Oilers within 4-2 only 50 seconds later, then Peckham batted the rebound of an Andrew Cogliano chance past Conklin at 18:52.
But Winchester pushed the Blues' edge back to two at 5-3, when he managed to sweep the puck through a goalmouth scramble and under Dubnyk just before the six-minute mark of the third period.
Edmonton went with an extra skater for the final two minutes to no avail.
Oshie opened the scoring for St. Louis with a high wrister off a dish from Alex Steen at 8:46 of the first period.
Gagner equalized for the Oilers at 11:47, but Pietrangelo sent the home team to intermission with a one-goal edge after pushing a right-point shot through traffic and in.
