Glencross, Flames slip past Blackhawks
Feb 8, 2011 - 6:10 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Curtis Glencross notched the winner in the third period and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 22 shots as Calgary downed Chicago, 3-1, at the Saddledome.Mikael Backlund and Rene Bourque also hit the net for the Flames, who have taken seven of their last eight games.
"Guys are staying very level headed, even keel, but we're also very excited in the fact that we put ourselves in this situation," said Flames head coach Brent Sutter about Calgary's win putting it in the top eight of the Western Conference.
Patrick Kane posted the lone score for the Blackhawks, who have lost four of five. Corey Crawford played well in defeat, making 25 saves.
Glencross put the Flames ahead by a 2-1 count at 8:37 of the third period, when he accepted an Olli Jokinen feed and ripped a shot over Crawford's glove from the left circle.
Chicago's Brent Seabrook was sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct with 1:14 to play, and Bourque wrapped up the game with an empty netter in the final 30 seconds.
"That was an undisciplined penalty that you can't take," said Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville on Seabrook's gaffe. "I don't mind having an attitude and you're upset about what's going on, but that was not a good one."
Backlund opened the scoring at 14:33 of the first period when he broke up the middle and beat Crawford on the backhand.
Kane tied the game just shy of the six-minute mark in the second period, one- timing a Jonathan Toews pass from in front.
