Flyers hold off fading Rangers
Feb 21, 2011 - 12:03 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Brian Boucher made 37 saves, 14 of which came in the third period, and the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Flyers escaped Madison Square Garden with a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers.Jeff Carter and Claude Giroux both registered a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who wrapped up their road trip with a 3-1-0 mark.
"It's one of those things where you don't want to get complacent," said Boucher. "We still need to win games and keep pushing ourselves. We want to get home-ice for the playoffs and that's our goal."
Henrik Lundqvist stopped 20-of-23 shots for New York, which has lost eight of its last 10.
"I thought a number of players played really well, but it's about winning a hockey game and we just haven't been consistent enough here," said New York head coach John Tortorella. "We are going to ramp it up again tomorrow and start again."
Down 3-1 after 40 minutes, the Rangers applied tons of pressure in the third period, outshooting Philadelphia by a 15-3 margin.
Derek Stepan beat Boucher at 5:28 to draw New York within a goal, less than a minute after the Flyers goalie made a great save with the right pad to rob the rookie center. Boucher looked to be shaken up after the save and was examined by the team trainer, but stayed in the game.
Kris Versteeg hit the empty net inside the final minute -- his first goal as a Flyer -- to seal Philadelphia's fourth win in as many meetings with the Rangers this season.
Wojtek Wolski staked New York a 1-0 lead at 12:43 of the first period, scoring from his knees in the crease. Carter tied the game four minutes later on a deflection in the slot.
The Flyers moved ahead on a power-play goal by Giroux. Carter was denied by Lundqvist, then backhanded the puck to Giroux with the goalie down and he lit the lamp at 12:52 of the middle frame.
Daniel Carcillo whipped a backhander under the pads of Lundqvist to give the visitors a two-goal advantage with 3:34 remaining in the second period.
