Flyers halt four-game slide with win over Oilers
Mar 9, 2011 - 3:46 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24 shots as the Philadelphia Flyers stopped a four-game skid with a 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers at Wells Fargo Center.Jeff Carter scored twice while Danny Briere added a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who were coming off a 7-0 shellacking at the hands of the Rangers on Sunday.
It was Philly's first win over Edmonton since March 19, 2001. The Oilers had posted six wins and a tie in the previous seven games and lost in Philly for the first time since November 9, 2000.
"We did a great job in the first period and got pucks in deep," said Philadelphia defenseman Chris Pronger. "We moved our feet and did all the little things that you have to do to win games."
Jean-Francois Jacques had the only goal of the game for the Oilers, who had a three-game winning streak stopped. Devan Dubnyk stopped 23-of-26 shots in the loss.
"It's one thing to respect your opponenets," said Edmonton head coach Tom Renney. "It's another thing to respect them and stand around and watch them play. Ultimately, we got our legs under us, but the horse was out of the barn."
Philadelphia dominated the first period, outshooting Edmonton by a 17-1 margin and using that dominance to take a 2-0 lead.
The first goal came 8:54 in when Matt Carle sprung Briere on a breakaway that saw the center break an eight-game goalless drought with a snapper past the glove of Dubnyk.
Ladislav Smid took a five-minute major for boarding when he slammed Darroll Powe into the boards and Philadelphia struck once during the advantage.
Holding the puck at the left point, Claude Giroux sent to down to the left side where Briere threw it out front for an easy tap-in by Carter with 2:20 to play in the first.
Edmonton's first and only shot of the period came with just over a minute to play with the team on the power play.
It was a 3-0 game off of a faceoff win for the Flyers. After a successfully draw at the right circle, James van Riemsdyk fired a pass over to the left side for Kimmo Timonen, who immediately sent it back to the front and Carter had the easy slay at the 7:05 mark.
However, Edmonton got one back less than a minute later as Jacques redirected a Smid shot from the left point into the net to make it a 3-1 game.
Bobrovsky stopped 13 shots in the third period, including a couple of big stops in the late stages and Blair Betts' empty-netter in the final minute sealed the win.
