Isles down Leafs in OT

Mar 9, 2011 - 4:53 AM Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Blake Comeau's goal off a deflection with 58 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the New York Islanders to a 4-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Nassau Coliseum.

After some good puck possession in the Toronto zone with time winding down, the disc came out to Frans Nielsen, who fired a shot from the right point that Comeau deflected past James Reimer to give the Islanders the victory.

Comeau also had an assist in regulation, while Nielsen had a goal in addition to the helper on the game-winning tally. Michael Grabner and Zenon Konopka also scored for the Islanders, who have won three of their last four.

"It's always fun to get on the scoring sheet and you can do some things offensively for the team," Nielsen said.

Al Montoya turned aside 24-of-27 shots to pick up the victory.

Tim Brent had a goal and an assist, while Nikolai Kulemin lit the lamp for Toronto, which suffered a 5-3 loss versus Chicago on Saturday and has dropped four of its last six. Keith Aulie registered his first career goal, while Reimer made 36 saves in defeat.

"Obviously we need points, but it hurts not to get that second one," Aulie said. "I don't think we played our best tonight. I don't think we respected our opponent enough coming into their area and it cost us."

After a scoreless opening period, Konopka tipped home a Milan Jurcina shot to get the Islanders on the board at 2:15 of the second.

However, Aulie took a feed from Brent in the slot and fired a wrister by Montoya to tie the contest just 34 seconds later.

Reimer stopped Matt Martin with a glove save on a penalty shot at 7:45, but the Islanders went back in front at 11:17 of the stanza when Nielsen put a rebound into a wide open net off a Kyle Okposo redirection.

Brent evened things at 2-2 with 1:16 left in the second. Montoya made the initial save off a Colby Armstrong shot from in close, but Brent jammed the rebound into the net.

Grabner's wrist shot from the right circle beat Reimer on the stick side at the 8:40 mark of the third before Kulemin tied the game at 9:48 to close out the scoring in regulation.

Game Notes

The Isles improved to 15-15-5 on Long Island this season, while Toronto dropped to 14-16-3 as the visitor.
